How can we make our voices heard (School system)?
I have not cared for our current school system for quite some time. But I have had enough and I know others have too? How can we make our voices heard?
Should we start small? For example, my daughter is in 3rd grade and is struggling with math. They have jumped from learning multiplication (without any rhyme or reason to it) to doing algebra. I'm not joking. One of her problems (there were 35 of these) was 3x(ax6)=36. Mind you, they haven't even touched on division. They've only been working on their multiplication tables for a month and are still trying to get those down. The teacher has no breathing room, it is dictated that she teach in this order and on this time line.
Do I start with this and continue to move it up to larger things? I fear if we don't do something now, things will just get worse!
Any productive thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Start with the teacher. Let her know your concerns. Do they allow parents to help tutor in the classroom? Some schools do. If you don't get an acceptable response, the next step is the principal and then the school board. You should be going to the school board meetings if you can possibly manage it. If you are unhappy with what you see there, run for the position from where you live the next time it comes up.
The other thing I would suggest is work with your daughter at home. Do you have Lego's? Go get some if you don't. I swear they are the best math tool ever. You can use the blocks to add, subtract, multiply, divide, count by different numbers 2,3,5... even the algebra you showed. Not only can she manipulate the math with her hands, she can see it. The light will come on. I can't imagine why they have done that to those kids, it seems like they are setting them up to feel they can't do math. I really dislike government education.
