Should I get the leapster 2 or leapster explorer for 4yr old?
I asked this question before but for a ds or leapster. I decided not to get the ds since it's expensive and I feel that he is too young. Now I'm looking at the leapster systems and games and they seem to fit him. I'm undecided on which system to get him. I see the Leapster 2 is cheaper and has a wider range of games then the Explorer. The Explorer is higher and so are the games and they are not compatible with any of the other Leapster games. The Explorer does have better features like downloadable apps and ebooks, and accessories like a digital carma. I'm trying to see what's best for him. Can you guys help me? thanks
I know nothing about Leapster 2, but I'm an expert on the Explorer now, lol, so I can tell you more about that and maybe that'll help your decision.
My daughter and nephew both just turned 4 (my nephew in december, my daughter in january) and they both got an the Leapster Explorer for Christmas from their grandparents. They LOVE it. My nephew will actually spend a couple hours playing it, but my more hyper daughter never spends more than an hour at a time sitting and playing it-she'll actually walk around while playing it, though. My nephew just sits there-unfortunately his dad's raising him as a couch potato. But it occupies my daughter very well.
And it is teaching them things. My daughter has Penguins of Madagascar, tthe digital camera, the Princess Storybook with Belle and Cinderella, Mr. Pencil Saves Doodleberg, Dora the Explorer, and just got Tangled and Pet Pals with a giftcard she got for Christmas (she wanted them instead of anything else from Toys-R-Us, like Barbie stuff or dolls). They teach ABC's, readng skills, math and counting like simple addition, problem solving, creativity, and much more. Dora teaches spanish, and my daughter can now count to 5 in spanish and is getting better. Next she'll get Ni Hao Kai-Lan and Scooby Doo. They'll cover most of the games for her age group, 4-7. But my nephew has the Wolverine game for 5-9 and he is great at it.
Because of Penguins, my daughter can now add small number, like 1+4, and subtract small number like 4-3. And Dora is teaching her spanish. Tangled is teaachhing some simple spelling in very fun ways, like braiding her hair and shooting arrows at the correct letters. Mr. Pencil has helped heer learn how to more correctly write certain letters, and has taught her more shapes.
And no, they aren't cheap, but they are very much worth the money. I'm a single mom, broke at the moment, so when I say something like that, you can believe I mean it, lol:) I KNOW without a doubt that my daughter and nephew will both still be playing with their Explorers in 4-5 years. And when they are done with them, we'll hand them over to another child.
Hooking it up to your computer is extremely easy. It tells you exactly what website to go on, how to sign up, which is simple, and does most of the work for you. One of the free games is really cute-they make their own pets. It could have a pig head, a cat body, and a dragon tail, but never scary, lol-just cute, I promise. It make all different noises, does tricks for treats, they give it a bath, etc. My daughter's favorite part is the bath. And yoou go back on your computer to occassionally get it more treats and shampoo. My daughter just ran out of shampoo, so tonight I'll be hooking it back up. THe leapster website gives you a certain amount of coins-800 I think-and you can buy shampoo, treats, and things for their games with them.
The digital camera is very fun. They can make up stories with it using the pics they take, or draw on the pics they take. It's a pretty good camera, too-not cheap like most kid camera's out there that can't take a decent picture no matter what they do.
I definitely reccomend the explorer, but again, I know nothing about leapster 2. The only downfall with the explorer is getting the games from stores-certain games are very hard to find, like Scooby Doo, Toy Story, and Ni Hao Kai-Lan (by me anyway) because I think they're newer. But you can order off the Leapster website, and when you first sign up, they give you a coupon for a game. But besides availability of certain games, its a great purchase. And is educational regardless of what some people might say!
Oh, one more thing. I will also be investing in a pair of headphones for my daughter. I beelieve they're like $12, and after hearing the word triangle repeated 100 times in 30 minutes, well worth the money, lol. You may want to consider them, too:)
Good luck with your decision, and I'm sure he'll be happy no matter which you decide on.
