I am not SURE. But that doesn't mean I can't guess. I would have to guess that walking around would be the only way. Because, for example, when breeding, you must walk around alot for pokemon to breed and for eggs to hatch. So, I would have to expect that honey works the same way. But maybe since game freak re-introduced the clock feature, it depends on time...
