How can I improve my concentration and battle procrastination?
I've been noticing that my academic performance has been declining. I think part of the reason is that I procrastinate and, when I do study, I can't concentrate and get constantly distracted. I'm entering junior year next September and I hear it's a big leap from tenth grade. How I can train myself to concentrate better?
Training yourself to concentrate better is less effective than setting up a system to stop yourself from procrastinating.
Here's a simple system for overcoming procrastination that is easy and effective:
You'll do well if you do a little bit every day rather than putting it off and then having to cram lots of work into a short space of time. One effective way to do this is by 'time boxing'. This is where you commit to working for a set length, or 'box' of time that you can face working for.
With your next project or assignment commit to working on it every day from the day AFTER you read this. It doesn't matter how long you do it for as long as you actually do something daily.
Grab a timer, set it for 30 minutes, or 20, even five if that's all you can face, and commit to working for that long. You're 'free' to stop when your time's up, but you can keep going if you like.
Do the same thing the next day and the next and so on until it's finished. Each day you choose how long you set your timer for - just make sure you do it daily.
We all put things off and we all get distracted - don't feel bad about that. Instead, whatever you have to do, do a little to start it and do it daily to finish it.
