Preemie and speech question...?
My daughter will be two next month. I have some concerns about her speech. She was in speech through our early intervention program for a month and really blossomed; however, her speech hasn't changed much in the last six months. She only knows a few two word phrases such as "all gone", "all done", "great job", and "I know". She does; however, know three shapes, three colors, and 20/26 letters of the alphabet. We read (mostly first word and picture books) all the time since she has little patience for stories. She, too, has the Leapfrog alphabet learning pond. What else can I do, other than label everything in her environment and ask her questions that don't require a simple yes or no answer, to enhance her speech?
At 23 months and at the two-word level, your child has "caught up" with other children of her age who do not have speech problems. She has little patience for stories because she isn't developmentally ready, just like any 2 year- old. Books like "Pat the Bunny" and picture books with animals and their sounds, transportation (bus, car, train, plane, truck), and foods are the most appropriate for a kid her age.
You are doing everything right to stimulate her speech and language development, and she is now just like any child of her chronological age. Relax and enjoy her!
