New to databases. Is FileMaker still relevant to learn or should I take the leap into MySQL?
I am a Graphic Designer with some experience with programming methodology looking to create a database to store client data, design proofs (low res) and job tracking. Must be OS X compatible. Thanks in advance.
Sounds like you are the only one that is going to be using this database, so I would go with FileMaker. It sits locally on your machine, will be easier to set up, and has a nice GUI interface. It will also be more secure since you can only access it from your own computer.
MySQL would be for you if you had a large base of people interacting with your database. But, you would have to or pay someone to set up a server, secure it, and then you would probably use PHPMyAdmin to interact with your database meaning you'd have to set up a server to run php as well.
They are both OS X compatible though since you would interact with MySQL through a web browser. Also, FileMaker has tools that can interact with a MySQL server, so I would get FileMaker, use it, and in the end you could still easily switch to MySQL, but I doubt you will.
