Would Breeze Litter System help prevent UTI in Cats?
I just got home from spending $200 at the vet over my two cats having bacteria in their system (possible UTI). I recently got them using the Breeze Litter System, and wanted to know if anyone thinks it could prevent future UTIs... I thought maybe re-infection could be prevented by the fact that the urine flows down onto a pad rather than staying in the box and clumping. Any thoughts? Here's a link to the system in case you aren't familiar: http://www.breezeforcats.com/
Basically the pellets are non-absorbent and the urine goes down through some slats and is absorbed by a pad. The poop has to be scooped out once or twice a day.
Will give someone best answer!
UTIs can be caused by many things. While the breeze system may be a short-term solution because it won't have the clumping build up like other litters, it will be a pain in the butt if you aren't diligent. One: ODOR! You have to make sure to change the litter tray very often, which could be even more costly than treating the cat with the UTI. Cats are very clean and if they don't like the smell or condition of their litter pan, they will either hold it (can be bad for the kidneys) or use something else like your plants or a piece of furniture. You can try using something like Feline Pine, which are pellets made from pine that break down with liquid waste. This is biodegradable and it's all natural, which is better than clay clumping litter anyway.
TWO: WATER - Maybe your cats aren't getting enough water to flush out their system. Water is very important to a cat's diet and lack of hydration can result in UTI's Are you using a bowl that has stagnate water? even if you change the water daily, cats like cool fresh water and it may be worth your money to invest in a self purifying drinking fountain like a Drinkwell (see link below).
THREE: DIET - You need a diet for them that is moisture rich (some canned foods or fresh meats) and helps them maintain a good bodily Ph(canned or dry). Their food is very important and you may want to talk to your doctor about a diet that would be helpful for them since they have had a problem before.
FOUR: AGE - the older the cat gets, the more problems they are prone to. Keeping regular check ups and making sure you monitor changes in their behavior is a good way to make sure they stay healthy and happy.
I have a male cat that has been at the doctor several times for UTIs and he was even blocked once due to crystals. he is also 10 years old and just started having theses issues in the past two years. He is of geriatric age, and while he is generally healthy, he is just older so he is more prone to issues.
