Do Mormon men have to serve on a mission before getting married?
Just something I heard from a friend.
They're encouraged to, because it gives them the experience of serving the Lord full time without having to worry about giving their time to a wife and children. When he is serving, it gives the women time to mentally/spiritually prepare for marriage, knowing that their prospective future husband is not just doing what is morally right as he experiences the mission field, but is doing something very holy and admirable in God's sight (spreading the gospel) according to Mormon beliefs. This is very attractive to a devout Mormon woman.
Young Mormon women are also able to serve on a mission, but they may only go on a mission for 18 months, whereas the young men are offered 2 years. This is because the women are to be available by the time the young men come home to settle down and choose a wife.
