I've always been curious, why do computers still require to install games yet consoles can run off the disc?
I've always been fascinated with technology, and I'm a bit curious about something. I never questioned this when I was younger because disc based consoles were rare and I pretty much accepted that cartridges are programmed to pop in and be played as is. Plus consoles didn't have hard drives back then, so I understood why I had to install games.
Yet as time progressed and every console moved onto discs, I started to wonder, why do we still have to install games and such to our hard drives? I prefer PC gaming, but I love the convenience of popping the disc into the tray, booting it up, and playing without having to install it to a hard drive. PCs are more advanced than consoles, so why can't they do this? Or CAN they do it and is it a decision made by the manufacturers/publishers? What is the reason we have to continue installing every game from a disc before we can play?
I'd love it if a fellow tech geek could explain this to me.
Well you need to take a look at the history computers. In a computer all programs need to be installed, since, obviously, you're not gonna put a disc in every time you want to run a program. Computer games are built much the same way as other computer programs so they need to be installed.
Not only that but video game consoles are machines completely dedicated to running games, their hardware is made for that. They're "too slow" if you will to run a game right of the disc. While consoles, when running a game, concentrate on a single task, computers are made to execute a variety of programs, sometimes even at the same time, so they have to share the processing power with each of those tasks.
